Good Leaders Ask Great Questions

Ask questions that help people think, take ownership and choose a next step.

By John C. Maxwell

What this programme helps you work on.

Managers can become the answer to every problem without intending to. This programme explores how purposeful questions improve self-awareness, team development and difficult conversations. Participants practise making space for others to explain their thinking, consider options and take responsibility for a next step.

Who it suits

Managers who want better coaching and team conversations.

The focus

Self-leadership, team development, conflict and leadership transitions.

Inside the programme

What you’ll explore.

These themes guide the learning. The depth and selection depend on the format and the needs you bring.

Question your own assumptions

Examine what you believe about a situation and what you still need to understand before offering advice.

Help others think

Use open questions to explore a person’s goal, the obstacle they face and the options they have already considered.

Navigate difficult conversations

Practise inquiry during disagreement or a leadership transition, keeping attention on the issue and the people involved.

Turn discussion into ownership

Clarify the action the other person chooses, the support they need and how progress will be reviewed.

From ideas to action

Put it into practice.

Replace assumptions with purposeful questions in an upcoming conversation.

An example to work through

Bring a situation where a team member usually asks you to decide. Practise asking what they see, which options they have considered and what they recommend, then agree the decision or support needed from you.

This is an example of local application. We adapt the discussion to your situation and agreed scope.

Your practical takeaways

What you’ll work towards.

  • Questions prepared for a real leadership conversation.
  • Practice listening and following up without immediately supplying an answer.
  • A way to agree responsibility and a meaningful next step.

The learning experience

How it works.

Facilitated learning combines explanation, discussion and reflection on participants’ own situations. Where the agreed format allows, you practise an application and decide what to try at work. Scope, duration and any follow-up are agreed around the group’s needs.

A focused Lunch & Learn

The USD 8 per person fee plus 8% SST (USD 8.64 total) covers the session only; lunch is not included. The session introduces a selected idea and its practical application. It is an introduction to the topic; the wider themes above describe the broader learning available. All sessions are hybrid. Starting in 2027, Lunch & Learn runs on selected Mondays, 12pm–2pm Malaysia Time. Exact dates will be confirmed before enrolment. No preparation is required. Sessions are conducted in English, in Malaysia Time (MYT, UTC+8). We use ClassIn for hybrid sessions. Online and in-person members participate fully in the same class: ask questions, contribute to discussions and work through member cases together. The joining link and learning management system (LMS) access will be provided five days before each session.
